Durham Castle

Durham Castle is only a five minute drive from the A1(M) and a ten minute walk from Durham Station. Durham Castle offers uniquely different university style accommodation in its grounds. This magnificent 11th century castle is part of a World Heritage site, with beautiful Durham Cathedral next door. As Durham Castle occupies such a fantastic location, it’s no wonder that budget travellers and backpackers flock to stay here. It’s really easy to explore the rest of Durham from this location too.

As you would expect from such affordable accommodation, the rooms are simply furnished. Some of them have private bathrooms and the rest share facilities. After a good night's sleep you will awake to a full English breakfast being served in one of the opulent state rooms of Durham Castle, which is included in the price of your room. You can also join one of the guided tours for free too. In the evenings you should frequent the lively bar, where you can catch up with friends or make new ones.

Comfortable basic room in a unique place at Durham Castle. No mention of internet on the website, which is unusual in this day and age, and which apart from wifi in the bar, was nonexistant, despite there being an ethernet cable

I was most impressed by the accessability to Northbumrian Heritage, the ability for a visiting academic to reside in a castle is a unique experience and thus a treasured memory. The Housekeeping staff and Reception kindness could not be faulted, breakfast in the Great Hall was great and the total ambience of location near the Cathedral and academic buildings were all valuable in their own right

For an Australian, staying in Durham Castle is a fantastic experience, there aren't too many Norman Castles back home! The room was excellent with a stunning view and that huge hall has to be the best location for breakfast ever. A very nice breakfast too. Then there's the Castle tour - free for guests - centuries of history on display. Thank you

Great for novelty factor. Amazing to walk into Durham Castle in the evening when its all lit up. Remember that these are ultimately student rooms, but good student rooms at that, but student rooms nonetheless - basic but also kept very clean. Breakfast is great
