This magnificent 11th century castle is part of a World Heritage site, with beautiful Durham Cathedral next door. As Durham Castle occupies such a fantastic location, it’s no wonder that budget travellers and backpackers flock to stay here. It’s really easy to explore the rest of Durham from this location too.
As you would expect from such affordable accommodation, the rooms are simply furnished. Some of them have private bathrooms and the rest share facilities. After a good night's sleep you will awake to a full English breakfast being served in one of the opulent state rooms of Durham Castle, which is included in the price of your room. You can also join one of the guided tours for free too. In the evenings you should frequent the lively bar, where you can catch up with friends or make new ones.

Durham Castle Reviews
Room very nice but very cold. We asked for a heater and were given it. We needed the blankets not just for the bed. Staff very obliging. Breakfast was excellent but on first morning we wrongly interpreted 9.30 as getting to the restaurant by 9.30 instead of getting all your food by 9.30. This was not a problem as the staff kept it open for a few more minutes. The banging fire door needs to be fixed. Overall a very nice stay and we would come back
Excellent accommodation and excellent breakfast in the Great Hall! Not sure I would wish to stay anywhere else in Durham
I had a very pleasant 3 nights overall, the breakfasts for this type of accommodation were first class with so much choice and quality. The only criticism I have is that the first single room I was given I thought was very poor for the money especially the difference between en suite and not. Whilst I appreciate that it is a very old building and normally student rooms, there was only a very small window from which I could only see the roof. I know that you are always at a disadvantage wanting a single room when it comes to cost but I felt like a servant rather than a guest. Charles on the reception desk was extremely friendly and helpful and I moved to another
My stay was very nice, breakfast and bed. The castle is very beautiful as well
