Durham Castle is only a five minute drive from the A1(M) and a ten minute walk from Durham Station. Durham Castle offers uniquely different university style accommodation in its grounds. This magnificent 11th century castle is part of a World Heritage site, with beautiful Durham Cathedral next door. As Durham Castle occupies such a fantastic location, it’s no wonder that budget travellers and backpackers flock to stay here. It’s really easy to explore the rest of Durham from this location too.
As you would expect from such affordable accommodation, the rooms are simply furnished. Some of them have private bathrooms and the rest share facilities. After a good night's sleep you will awake to a full English breakfast being served in one of the opulent state rooms of Durham Castle, which is included in the price of your room. You can also join one of the guided tours for free too. In the evenings you should frequent the lively bar, where you can catch up with friends or make new ones.
As you will be staying in the grounds of Durham Castle, it makes sense to join in on one of the guided tours. You shouldn’t miss the opportunity to explore Durham Cathedral next door either. Although Durham is a compact city, it has its fair share of shops, pubs and restaurants for you to explore as well as attractions like St Nicholas Church and the Botanic Gardens. If you fancy a trip outside of Durham you can always catch a bus to the North of England’s Open Air Museum in Beamish.

We had the misfortune to arrive during a celebration of the Battle of Britain, so accessing Durham Castle and parking was very difficult and stressful. The staff in the reception center tried to be helpful but required some prodding to get issues resolved. There were 87 steps to the rooms. The rooms themselves were very clean and serviceable, very much like dorm rooms. The location of the castle was convenient for sight seeing in the town. The wi-fi service went out for several hours and there are no TV's in the rooms. In general, it was rather expensive for the lack of amenities
Durham Castle was a wonderful place to stay. Blows away all the other accommodation out with the university grounds.Oozes nostalgia, inclusive informative castle tour, top quality breakfast and to top it all you get to stay in the castle for the night
Twin room top floor. Comfortable beds, great to have the en-suite. Would definitely consider rebooking Durham Castle in the future. Lovely to have breakfast in the Great Hall, hot plates would be appreciated especially for cooked breakfast, also tea/coffee water not hot enough. Luckily the surroundings made up for these
We loved our stay at Durham Castle. No better view in the world. Since we are both in our 70's and suffering some degree of back issues, hauling the bags up 83 steps (we counted them) was a challenge, and hustling down them in our pj's at midnight for the fire alarm was a bit of an adventure. The staff were warm, friendly and always helpful and cheerful. Everything was perfectly adequate. We were not looking for or expecting luxury in a dormitory room. We would happily stay there again
I stayed at Durham Castle for one night during a job interview at Durham. The staff are very nice and helpful. The single room is clean and tidy, although it is not en-suite and do have to share the bathroom with other guests. However, that's not an issue during my stay as it was not busy at that time. Overall, I am happy with my stay at Durham Castle
