This magnificent 11th century castle is part of a World Heritage site, with beautiful Durham Cathedral next door. As Durham Castle occupies such a fantastic location, it’s no wonder that budget travellers and backpackers flock to stay here. It’s really easy to explore the rest of Durham from this location too.
As you would expect from such affordable accommodation, the rooms are simply furnished. Some of them have private bathrooms and the rest share facilities. After a good night's sleep you will awake to a full English breakfast being served in one of the opulent state rooms of Durham Castle, which is included in the price of your room. You can also join one of the guided tours for free too. In the evenings you should frequent the lively bar, where you can catch up with friends or make new ones.
As you will be staying in the grounds of Durham Castle, it makes sense to join in on one of the guided tours. You shouldn’t miss the opportunity to explore Durham Cathedral next door either. Although Durham is a compact city, it has its fair share of shops, pubs and restaurants for you to explore as well as attractions like St Nicholas Church and the Botanic Gardens. If you fancy a trip outside of Durham you can always catch a bus to the North of England’s Open Air Museum in Beamish.

Durham Castle was a fantastic place to stay. We had a beautiful room with an amazing view. The room was clean, tidy and well maintained
Staying in Durham Castle is a fascinating experience. It is a wonderful historic building, full of character. My room was in the Keep of the Castle, which involved climbing 105 steps to reach, so you have to be fit! No lift was available. It was a well appointed and clean room, with a washbasin and tea/coffee making facilities, although not ensuite and with no TV. Bathrooms (with showers and W.C.'s) were quite close by on the same floor. There was a good view of the River Wear and the town from the window. An excellent buffet breakfast (English and Continental) was available in the the impressive Great Hall, and guests shared large tables so you could talk to other guests over breakfast. The staff were very friendly and helpful
A basic price for an very good service. friendly, helpful staff. Recommend Durham Castle
Durham Castle is a wonderful place to stay. Great room (though a lot of stairs, travel light!), great view, great location, great breakfast and friendly staff. Everything was fabulous
Enjoyable stay at Durham Castle and a good price for a very central location. Clean room, on the smallish side, but comfortable enough. Excellent breakfast and plenty of it. Friendly and helpful staff. Lots of stairs which may bother those with a lot of luggage. Also no TV in room, but does encourage you to catch up with your holiday reading
