Durham Castle is only a five minute drive from the A1(M) and a ten minute walk from Durham Station. Durham Castle offers uniquely different university style accommodation in its grounds. This magnificent 11th century castle is part of a World Heritage site, with beautiful Durham Cathedral next door. As Durham Castle occupies such a fantastic location, it’s no wonder that budget travellers and backpackers flock to stay here. It’s really easy to explore the rest of Durham from this location too.
As you would expect from such affordable accommodation, the rooms are simply furnished. Some of them have private bathrooms and the rest share facilities. After a good night's sleep you will awake to a full English breakfast being served in one of the opulent state rooms of Durham Castle, which is included in the price of your room. You can also join one of the guided tours for free too. In the evenings you should frequent the lively bar, where you can catch up with friends or make new ones.
As you will be staying in the grounds of Durham Castle, it makes sense to join in on one of the guided tours. You shouldn’t miss the opportunity to explore Durham Cathedral next door either. Although Durham is a compact city, it has its fair share of shops, pubs and restaurants for you to explore as well as attractions like St Nicholas Church and the Botanic Gardens. If you fancy a trip outside of Durham you can always catch a bus to the North of England’s Open Air Museum in Beamish.

I very much enjoyed my stay at Durham Castle, and had a lovely room in The Keep (despite 84 steps up each time - whew!). The Castle is a wonderful part of our heritage and a great privilege to have been able to stay there. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Durham is beautiful
Durham Castle was excellent. Room was excellent, breakfast superb. All University staff we met (Reception, Porters, Catering, Bar Staff, Tour Guides) were very welcoming and friendly. Very much enjoyed our three nights
Really enjoyed our stay Durham Castle. Comfortable room with lots of character in a historic setting. Free tour of the castle was an added bonus. Staff were very friendly and helpful, breakfast buffet plentiful. Can't think of a better place to stay to experience the history and atmosphere
Durham Castle is a very nice place. Kind staff, excellent breakfast in a special atmosphere and a homely Undercroft Bar to have a drink in the evening!
Loved my stay at Durham Castle. The room was comfy and the shared bathroom was spotless. They provide everything you need (towels, toiletries, tea and coffee etc.) The breakfast was great (both the full English, but also the only place in England where I saw cheese and ham at the buffet). Choice of different coffees, teas and juice. Eating in the immense great hall was a treat. Parking on the green was easy and the free guided tour through the castle was interesting
