Tate Gallery of Modern Art

The building itself was transformed from an old power station and the gallery is fast attracting its fair share of visitors.

Located at Bankside, it contains international modern art based around four main themes: Landscape, Still Life, The Nude and History.

The Tate Modern displays the national collection of international modern art, which is defined as art produced post 1900.

Serpentine Gallery

Alternatively, one of the premier London galleries can be found in the heart of Kensington Gardens.

Originally founded 40 years ago by the Arts Council of Great Britain the gallery attracts around 600,000 visitors a year and is one of the best places for visitors to go and appreciate modern and contemporary art and architecture.

Among the many artists to exhibit their works at the Serpentine are Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol and Henry Moore.

National Gallery

Housing one of the greatest art collections in the world, the National Gallery can be found on the north side of Trafalgar Square.

National Portrait Gallery

A short walk next door will see visitors having the opportunity to peruse the National Portrait Gallery's 7,000 paintings, sculptures and photographs.

It contains illustrations of a number of prominent individuals who have helped to shape the history of the UK including William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Queen Elizabeth I and many others.

Royal Academy of Arts

This gallery is an independent, privately-funded body which is run by leading artists and architects.

It was founded by George III in 1768 to promote painting, printmaking, sculpture and architecture.

Today the Royal Academy continues to encourage the creation, enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate.

Barbican Art Gallery & the Curve

Located at Silk Street, the Barbican is not just an arts gallery.

The centre also presents a diverse programme of world-class performing and visual arts, encompassing all forms of classical and contemporary music, international theatre and dance, visual arts and design.

The Saatchi Gallery

The Saatchi Gallery in its current guise was opened in 2008 by Charles Saatchi - one half of the acclaimed global advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi.

However, more recently the advertising guru has branched out into the arts sector helping a number of up and coming artists find a place for their work.

His gallery contains his huge and changing collection of art and it is open to the public.

The current premises are located on the Kings Road.

Brick Lane Gallery

Visitors to this east London will be able to take in a number of exhibits which promote some of the best contemporary and street art by British and international artists.

A heavy focus is placed on emerging and mid-career artists and you may even be lucky enough to coincide your visit with one of the gallery's integrated programme of exhibitions.

Indeed, the long list of names associated with the gallery is enough to get even the most hardened art fan excited.

The Photographers' Gallery

The Photographers' Gallery is the largest public gallery in London completely dedicated to photography.

Showcasing the best in emerging talent alongside historical archives and established snappers, this is the place to visit to appreciate the relatively modern art form.

The gallery, which was established in 1971, also boasts the title of being the UK's first independent photographic gallery.

The gallery is located a short walk from Oxford Circus tube station.
