City View Hotel London Reviews: 5.9
Alison Tynan, English (11 December 08) 1/10
Very poor. Basement room, no curtains, electric bulb coming out of wall. Toilet blocked.
Alan Costello, British (10 December 08) 9/10
I booked the hotel on price - and then read the reviews - and panicked. I rang up to see if I would have to bring my own bedding to avoid bed-bugs and the receptionist laughed and said not to worry. I think there had been some problems that they have sorted out. I found the place was a proper hotel with sign, large reception area, 15 seconds from the tube, very friendly staff, clean room well heated with fridge, TV and kettle. I liked the sound of the nearby train - it reminded me of my caravanning days in the West of Ireland at Rosses Point when the west wind howled like a banshee while I was tucked snug in my sleeping bag - but when I tired of it, I just shut the double-glazed windows. Come on, people, the place is a bargain, and who wants to pay more for some high-class receptionist to make you feel they are doing you a favour letting you stay in their posh hotel? The staff here make you feel welcome. No cockroaches at all and just one friendly little mouse. Not a reflection on the cleanliness, just it is an older building. I loved it at the price - that's why I am bothering to write - will stay there again if I am down that way. It has character, and the staff were especially helpful even with car parking facilities. Thanks guys.
Ann, Scottish (10 December 08) 9/10
Very basic accommodation in a convenient location. I would happily stay here again.
Phillip Moore, English (10 December 08) 7/10
Well I thought this hotel was very good for the money: excellent location, clean rooms with clear towels etc and best of all it wasn't noisy even though it was so close to the tube. The only one downside is the outside of the hotel does look very cheap and tacky. But my final conclusion is that it was a good hotel, perfect for a one night stay.
Joerg Schneider, German (09 December 08) 6/10
Positives: The hotel is right next to the subway station, very central, huge bed, nice view (if you have a room to the front), clean. Negatives: Small room (only slightly bigger than the bed), no storage space, not even a few hooks or shelves on the wall, train tracks near the hotel, very loud if you have a room to the back.
Nette Kristensen, Danish (08 December 08) 5/10
Alright for the price, good service. Easy to get to the tube.
Karen, British (08 December 08) 8/10
Very close to the tube station, so excellent location. Rooms basic, but clean which is what counts. For the money I found it good value and would stay there again.
Louise, New Zealander (06 December 08) 5/10
Average rating for relative cost. Close to transport - though not good for light sleepers. Bed was comfortable, bathrooms were clean although some fixtures were not working properly. Staff were helpful, eventually.
Igor, Slovenian (06 December 08) 8/10
My wife and I spent 4 nights during our tourist visit of London. We've just slept in the hotel at night which is a good choice because of the perfect location near tube station (20m) so you can reach every district of London quickly. Room was small but clean. Some noise made by the nearby train but no biggie. Price was reasonable for service. In neighbourhood there are many pubs, fast foods and small convenient stores. We will definitely stay in City View during our next stay in London.
Vanessa, Finnish (03 December 08) 6/10
Room was small but had TV and fridge so it was all in all ok.
tracey handy, english (17 November 08) 1/10
My room was not in hotel but 2 doors up the road, shower did not work, room dirty, no curtains and carpets smelled of urine, toilet carpet leaked, so feet soaked in it, had to throw footwear away.
Steve , Scottish (07 October 08) 2/10
Warning - Read this before booking - Only stay here if you want: electronics that don’t work, no air conditioning and a broken fan, unhelpful staff for the most part, no sleep, disgusting shower curtains and headboards. We arrived on the Friday to find our room right beside the railway tracks (which the hotel is situated beside) with trains going by every so often which was annoying as there is no double glazing. Then our room had what seemed to be a music club less than twenty feet away with blaring music, and I mean loud! Loud enough to easily keep you awake! We could have had the club in our room! It was hardcore "thump thump" music also. We tried to get to sleep but could not. Then at 4 in the morning I went down to ask to move rooms and was waved away and told we would change rooms in the morning. Then the receptionist said "it's stopped now yeah? Don’t worry it's stopped, yeah ok you can move rooms in the morning". The music went on till half ten the next morning.
Catherine Davidson, British (06 October 08) 1/10
Please do not stay here! I've just come back from a 2 night stay at this hotel. I booked a double en suite room as all the reviews said the rooms with the shared bathrooms were awful. When I arrived I was told there was a problem with my room and given a twin room (instead of a double!) with a shared bathroom (instead of an en suite!) It was terrible; the noise to the front of the building was constant as there was a bus stop right outside and constant sirens. To the back of the building there were trains going past and constant loud music. The bathroom was permanently cold as the windows did not shut properly, it was not clean and there was even a mouse in our room! The lock on the door was not very sturdy so I did not feel very safe. I was given breakfast as compensation for there being a problem with the room I had booked originally but this was simply eggs and beans... not really worth the extra cash I had paid for the room we wanted.
Michelle , Anon (03 October 08) 2/10
We booked our room a week in advance yet on the day we were meant to arrive, we were sent to a different hotel, which was half hour walk away (from the tube station also) and for the same price the standard here was not as good. We were also texted the address with no directions and had to figure out where it was on our way to London which is not easy. Not very professional.
Mike Gillom, British (03 October 08) 2/10
Room was just acceptable with obvious signs of unfinished repairs. The railway was 5m away from my bedroom window I never saw any food, breakfast was not until after 8 00am, there was a kettle and 2 drinking glasses in my room but nothing else for tea making. On the whole, very disappointed I WILL NOT BE returning.
Joanne Pearson, British (26 September 08) 3/10
The room was alright for the money-the bedding looked clean and there was a TV. Right outside the window was the train, which was a bit noisy. Also I got covered in bed bug bites the night I stayed which was not pleasant! Also the hot shower was not working. Breakfast was nice though.
Ratchanun, Thai (01 September 08) 7/10
The room is quite good and very convenient because it's very near tube station. It's worth it considering the price.
Ms B Sarr, British (29 August 08) 4/10
The room was too small for two people and also very noisy with the trains going by. The bed was comfortable but there was no parking and I had to wake early to find a parking space so I could use the voucher the hotel had given me.
Luigi, Italian (27 August 08) 2/10
The Hotel was well-positioned but the room was horrible because we had the train passing all day (and night) two (really two!) meters next to us. The room was poorly furnished and the bathroom was really really bad.
Gary Sibley, British (26 August 08) 3/10
Originally booked a single room - wasn't aware it was with a shared bathroom, had no problem with this but then found that the shared bathroom was dirty and the shower head would not stay attached. Eventually "upgraded" to a room with own bathroom at much greater cost. Disappointed.
Aimee, British (26 August 08) 4/10
You get what you pay for I guess... Our room had flooded so we were put in one with a shared bathroom (I had paid for private). We were offered free breakfast which consisted of a slice of toast. The bed and room cannot be faulted and were clean, but there was a train line running right behind the hotel keeping people awake all night.
Carl Maycock, British (25 August 08) 1/10
The room was a little bit larger than the bed, incredibly noisy and there was a smoke detector hanging off the ceiling! The headboard on the bed was dirty and the decorating was dreadful (paint from the walls on the window sills and skirting boards). The shared bathrooms were dirty and broken. The general layout and decorating of the building was pitiful. They take a £5 charge for paying by card. This is by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. Hotel is probably the wrong description as a squat would be more appropriate! The only saving grace is that the room was very cheap (you get what you pay for!)
Isabella Woodley, American (18 August 08) 9/10
Excellent location-directly across from Bethnal Green tube station, close to sights, comfortable, clean bed, TV, great, cheap breakfast. Next door to shop and fried fish shack. Our only complaint is that the shower is not the greatest-weak and difficult to use. Would recommend.
Louise Vissen, British (17 August 08) 7/10
The City Hotel was great value for money, the staff were lovely and the room was clean and fresh. I recommend this hotel to anyone.
Rachel Writer, English (11 August 08) 8/10
Friendly and useful staff. The room was clean and tidy, with its own bathroom, which was definitely worth it. The tube station was about 10m from our window, which was noisy at first, but we soon got used to it. For the price we paid, the hotel was well worth it.
Julia, Australian (09 August 08) 4/10
Good value hotel and cheap area for food and drink! In zone 2 of the London metro, so this means a couple of extra pounds per trip? Staff did not go out of their way to be friendly. Rooms are right next to the train line but the windows block out the noise ok.
Serge Boucher, Belgian (06 August 08) 6/10
Decent but very cheap. My room was in the basement and had a few exposed wires but it was clean. Shared washroom was one floor above which is annoying. They charge 5 GBP more if you pay by credit card. All in all it's not the nicest hotel I've ever been to but given the price and the location it's a decent deal.
Robin, American (03 August 08) 8/10
This hotel was very comfortable and clean, conveniently located near the tube, and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. There was also a nice breakfast/sitting area. Highly recommended-great value!
Alan Beirne, Irish (02 August 08) 3/10
We stayed at this hotel for the Excel Motor show 24th - 27th July 2008. On the positive, it was convenient to the "sweat Met" tubes and within easy reach of all London attractions. The hotel itself was right next door to "Mr. Cod" who serves up a mighty long fish with millions of chips for under £4 stg. City View has an even better offer of breakfast for £2.50 stg per person. Reception staff were very friendly and even carried our cases to the room. The sweets on the reception desk were beautiful! You can view your room before you have to pay the balance. On the negative, we wish we had known how Armin (21st July 2006), managed to get a stand-up fan as the water spilled out of our bodies for the 3 nights. Even with the window fully open, the tiny room was hot and humid. Still, as Douglas (www.booking.com) said, the fan they got was so covered in dust that they couldn’t use it...must have blown up by the time that we got there, 3 weeks later.
Mr. G Allard, British (29 July 08) 4/10
I was disappointed that the room had no tea & coffee making facility as advertised, the headboard was stained, and the TV did not work. The staff were fine and changed my room after I complained.
Andy, British (28 July 08) 1/10
Staff were friendly enough and I got the room last minute and very cheap... but the room I got was GRIM - directly beneath a shared shower/toilet room and a few yards away from the A107 and the underground line at Bethnal Green. I got to sleep - somehow! OK for the heavy sleeper on a tight budget. Not for the faint-hearted. Great location for the tube!
Ash , British (28 July 08) 2/10
Poor customer service. Complained about broken sky window and faulty bathroom light at reception twice but nothing was done. Double bedroom and bathroom was on the small side. No air con. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and will not book again.
Susan M., American (28 July 08) 8/10
Friendly staff, clean room. The train station was a little noisy with the windows open; closed not so bad. Air-con in the room would help. Cheap rates.
Ann, British (28 July 08) 7/10
Good clean basic accommodation with friendly staff. Great location for underground. Great for the price.
Kim Wareham, British (27 July 08) 2/10
I have stayed at the hotel before but since then it seems to have gone downhill. There was no sheet on the duvet, the bath was dirty and the fire alarm was covered with a carrier bag which I can only assume was because someone was smoking. There was cigarette burns in the net curtain, no bin liner in the bin. There was no air conditioning and because the windows only open so far it was very hot and stuffy-definitely not a place to stay in the summer. Generally we were very disappointed with the stay and are glad that we only stayed one night.
Geoff Marchant, British (30 April 08) 5/10
Fair value. Friendly helpful staff, comfortable bed, clean room, no shaver point anywhere in the building (I was in the annexe. On the downside, I booked a basic room (shared bathroom) but there were only two shared bathrooms for 12 rooms.
Wayne Mitchell, English (23 April 08) 9/10
I found the accommodation at City View very good. The location is strategically very convenient with public transport so close. Restaurants and cafe are also within close walking distance and I must thank you for recommending the excellent Lahore Express restaurant. The hotel room suited my needs and was quiet. I found the beds comfortable. The bathrooms were also clean and functional. Sometimes the hot water took some time to come through. The staff, all of them were friendly and helpful. I book City View again
Lars A. Ranheim, Anon (21 April 08) 8/10
City View hotel had good clean rooms. Everthing clean and in working conditioning. Convenient for the tub and East-End of London. Within walking distanse of decent restaurants and nightlife. Noise from trains are the the only drawback. Overall great value - will book City View again
Janne Vestby, Norwegian (19 April 08) 4/10
Clean sheets, easy to find, low price. Shared a bathroom, not the best room.It was OK. I guess you get what you pay for..
Phil Taylor, British (10 April 08) 3/10
Room smelt of smoke.Light bulb didn't work, Television could only get 1 channel, took me a while to work out that the hot tap was infact the cold tap in the shower! Smelt of paint becauase they were decorating, but it was cheap.
Jo Stone, British (05 February 08) 6/10
City View Hotel is very cheap so you can't expect too much for this kind of price in London. The hotel carpets could do with cleaning but it was quite clean apart from that. It is a little noisy because its next to the tube but it didn't keep me awake. Only two little bars of soap in the bathroom and no shampoo. Would recommend if you want a cheap place to stay in London but don't expect too much!
Kathleen Conner, British (04 December 07) 7/10
We had a pleasant stay at this hotel. The accomodation was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was good as an ordinary type. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Very convenient for Tube station. For the money this hotel is a good stay and very reasonable. A few finer details missing but very comfortable for the price in London area. Would definitely stay again in City View Hotel.
Rebecca, British (03 December 07) 8/10
Cheap & cheerful! Small but clean room, but for the price you cannot complain! Excellent location for getting around central london, very convinient location to the tube station. We would definatley stay here again.
Graeme Brown, Welsh (10 June 07) 9/10
An exceptional price for a very good, modern facility. It is very close to central London but has a real feel of a local community rather than a touristy rip off area such as Paddington. Definately use again.
Marie, Irish (14 October 06) 8/10
The city view hotel isn't bad if your looking for somewhere cheap to stay. The room we had was ok but unfortunately it faced onto the railway line, so I swapped for a quieter room. There's not alot for 1 to do on bethnal green road which is just directly round the corner from the hotel although there are some great pubs. I highly recommend the misty moon the barstaff particularly the landlord are very friendly & they do cheap & tasty meals. Brick lane is a good 10-15 mins walk from the hotel & there's not alot to see except for some very fine curry houses, bars and nightclubs. The best thing is probsbly the fact that the tube station is right outside the hotel so fast and easy access if you want to go anywhere in London.
Armin, German (31 July 06) 5/10
I had some mixed experiences with City View Hotel. The room was spacious and clean; I can't say anything against that. There was cable TV with about 100 channels which is something I have never seen in a hotel. I must say however that I wasn't very satisfied with the bathroom facilities. I booked a basic room without a private bathroom and as it was on the ground floor I had to climb up two flights of stairs until I could reach the bathroom. On my first day the shower curtain came down but was fixed after two days. The shower head itself didn't work very well. The trainline behind the building didn't bother me. One very good thing, especially in this hot summer we're experiencing: There was a stand-up fan in my room. All in all I'd say that City View Hotel London was good for the price - I only paid GBP 29.50 per night when I booked on travelstay - after all it's a budget b&b.
Agnes, Austrian (06 May 06) 9/10
I second Liam Brown's review, City View Hotel was excellent value for money.
Liam Brown, British (30 January 06) 10/10
Had a great stay at City View Hotel..clean, safe, friendly, next door to the Bethnal Green tube and it so it was great value for not much money.
Jonny, British (09 July 05) 9/10
Excellent value for money. Nice, clean and modern. Highly recommended.
Joanna Cardwell, Welsh (06 June 05) 9/10
For a random last minute on-line booking what a bargain! Fantastic location, clean and private en-suite rooms, 24 hour access amazing. I would definitely come back here.
Charles Dodwell, British (03 June 05) 9/10
City View is great value at a great price and is very clean. Also very close to Bethnal Green Tube. A bit noisy because the train is nearby, but staff provide you with a fan if you want to close the windows. No tea/coffee making kit in the room, and breakfast too late for me (8 am). Still excellent value for London and I would stay there again.
Selene, Irish (19 April 05) 3/10
This b&b has nice clean rooms and nice staff, but the breakfast is bad for the price paid. And the basic rooms are not so good - just the ensuite rooms.
Andrew, British (08 April 05) 9/10
Great for the price. Staff were very friendly. Place is more or less new. I thought at first that it was in good nick just because it was new and that it will gradually decline. However, our toilet seat was broken when we arrived, but, without our saying anything it had been fixed the next morning. Right next to tube station and Bethnal Green road with supermarket, cash machines, pubs etc. and the No. 8 bus which takes you all the way to Victoria station if you want. The railway line is just behind the hotel, but the noise is fine if you close the window (and the trains don't run at night). We'll be glad to stay at City View hotel there again.
Franco Ravagli, Italian (29 December 04) 9/10
Good B&B at low cost.
The tube station is just under the hotel and you can easily reach every part of London.
Ilya Brovin, Russian (15 December 04) 8/10
It was a very good stay, room is nice, staff were friendly. I would only mention that there was not place for me to hang my clothes in the room. Otherwise City View Hotel was very pleasant.
Chris , English (15 December 04) 8/10
Clean and tidy hotel with all the basic facilities that are required at a very good price.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Very close to tube on central line. West End and City only 15 minutes away. Will use City View Hotel again if staying in London
Rhi, Welsh (15 December 04) 10/10
Excellent stay! Room was amazing, breakfast was delicious and the reception/lounge area was stunning! Really good location too - very easy to get to Oxford Circus etc! Thank you!
Maria Jose, Spanish (15 December 04) 8/10
The room at City View hotel was very comfortable and nice, I only missed a kettle in the room. Breakfast was a bit different, you order what you'd like and they cook for you individually, so have to wait a little bit. The staff were very nice. I would reccommend it.
Soren Hollund, Danish (14 December 04) 9/10
The hotel was very nice, absolutely cosy and with a very pleasant friendly staff.

I'm absolutely going to stay at City View next time I’m in London again.
