Behind the luxurious Embankment Gardens is a wrought iron fence and boot-scuffed, stone stairway that leads onto a long veranda. At the bottom of the stairs, to the left, is an inconspicuous, almost invisible doorway. Well, it would be invisible were it not for the throng of people around it swilling wine and chattering. This is Gordon’s Wine Bar, and if you duck under the low archway of the door and head down into its warm heart, you’ll find yourself transported into a French wartime wine-cellar, bustling with activity. The low ceiling arches and grotto-like back room are cosy and welcoming, and the walls are bedecked with genuine newspaper cuttings from bygone eras (it’s fun to try and find the earliest). Get there early and bag a table in the cave at the back, look over the extensive wine menu and grab a bite of homemade loveliness to start off, or finish up, an unforgettable evening.
