Not to be confused with the Fortune Playhouse (a Jacobean theatre just west of Shoreditch) the Fortune Theatre is a vaguely art-deco appendage on Russell Street. As it wasn’t originally a theatre, the site was re-appropriated by its first owner and has since housed a great number of London’s most popular plays.
In 1989, a stage adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel The Woman in Black opened, and has been running ever since, usually to full houses. As a strong contender for one of the longest running shows in West End history (as nothing can beat The Mousetrap just round the corner), why don’t you see if you can get yourself a ticket? But be warned. This is, without a hint of sarcasm, one of the scariest things you will ever encounter in your life. No joke.
