Dalston House: Bewilder your senses in East London

Visitors to London can experience one of the most mind-boggling visual illusions in the world at Leandro Erlich’s Dalston House, which runs up to August 4th.

The internationally renowned Argentine artist famous for his three dimensional works that baffle people’s sense was commissioned by the Barbican to create a new installation in the East London neighbourhood of Dalston.

He created a theatre set-like façade of a Victorian terraced house that used to stand in the area, but built horizontally on the ground. Using a carefully placed diagonal mirror overhead, people can stand upon the building and look up at their reflection where it gives the impression they are standing on the building vertically.

People can then create remarkable looking tableaus by lying down and crawling along the floor the house, which makes it look like they are scaling the building vertically, or clinging on to a ledge to give the impression they are hanging off it.

When and where:

Dalston House can be found in a vacant lot on Ashwin Street on the doorstep of the Dalston Kingsland Overground stop. It is free to visit and will be open 11:00 to 18:00 BST Monday to Wednesday, 11:00 to 20:00 BST Thursday and Friday, and 10:00 to 20:00 BST Saturday and Sunday.
