Without doubt the capital is one of the best places in the country to study, with in excess of 50 universities and colleges to choose from scattered across the vast city landscape the student population is far from a minority.

The city offers a wealth of activities and entertainment that is sure to whet every student's palette.

However, contrary to popular belief individuals do not have to part with an arm and a leg to be able to enjoy themselves, as London offers plenty of opportunities for students to enjoy themselves on a budget.

Keep up with modern culture at London's free exhibitions!

A great way to get some stimulation from the arts is for students to pay a visit to some of London's free exhibitions.

The Wellcome Collection in King's Cross is conveniently nestled amongst some of London's biggest university and college campuses and routinely hosts spectacular and ground-breaking temporary exhibitions from artists.

Elsewhere, the Institute of Contemporary Arts, based just off Trafalgar Square is another venue to host regular free art exhibitions, talks, and gigs.

Contemporary art fans are sure to be impressed by the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea, the site is the world's first free contemporary art museum and shows off some of the finest contemporary art that London has to offer.
Team these venues with the plethora of free museums which are dotted around the capital and there is plenty to entertain students in between lectures.

Join the debate at London's free talks and lectures

Across the capital big name speakers and leading thinkers in their respective fields are sharing their wisdom in a series of free discussions on various subjects.
The British Academy is the national centre for humanities and social sciences and boasts a number of free lectures in the evening. Similarly, the Tate Modern offers free talks.
Not to be outdone, the London School of Economics (LSE) and UCL also deliver stellar lecture programmes, with LSE hosting some of the world's leading statesmen in the past, including Bill Clinton.

Dance the night away at free music venues!

Perhaps the best way to unwind after a hard days studying, there are hundreds of gigs and club nights for students to attend.
A great way to spend a Saturday afternoon from 4pm to 8pm is at the Notting Hill Arts Club where live bands can be heard.
The same venue also offers free midweek music on a Wednesday night.
For other tastes, the Southbank Centre and National Theatre both offer an incredible amount of free music and entertainment ranging from cool jazz to upbeat African drum music.

Get in the festival mood

The perfect way to celebrate the start of term or the end of exams, London's free festivals are a celebration of music, arts and culture.
Taking place at the tail end of summer in September, the Regent Street Festival features an eclectic mix of music and fashion shows for one day only.
Also taking place during September, the Liberty festival boasts a host of arts events, musical performances, street theatre and interactive workshops.

And, of course, one of the largest street parties in the capital, the Notting Hill Carnival is like no other event in London over the summer.
The highlight of the August Bank Holiday weekend, there is so much colour, music, food and entertainment going on that you won't know where to start.
