Celebrate the New Year in London

London’s famous New Year’s Eve fireworks will be back again for another year and promise to be even bigger and better than ever before.

Last year’s display wowed a crowd of over 200,000 along the Thames and London transport services will be running for free until the early hours to ensure that everyone gets home safely.

Kicking off 2011 in style, the New Year Parade (12pm-3pm; Westminster) starts in Parliament Square and sets off as soon as Big Ben strikes noon before finishing in Piccadilly.

The 2011 parade promises to be an exciting mix of marching bands, cheerleaders, clowns and acrobats drawing excited crowds to London.

Indeed, dance troupes and bands are expected to reach London from all corners of the Earth with more than 10,000 performers, representing 20 countries, scheduled to entertain.

Hit the sales

For those looking for the ultimate in discounted clothing, January is one of the best times of year to indulge in London shopping, with the opportunity to pick up plenty of bargains.

One of the top destinations for shopping is the Westfield Centre (White City), boasting an array of different designer and outlet shops, there are discounts to be found in many of the fashion boutiques and assorted shops.

Alternatively, located in north London, the Brent Cross (Hendon Central) shopping centre is home to large stores such as House of Fraser and Fenwick.

Of course, we couldn’t mention London shopping without mentioning Harrods (Knightsbridge). Its January sales shopping season starts at 10am on Boxing Day, with discounts across the store ranging from fashion to furniture.

In addition, the Christmas lights will still be up for a while longer, so keen shoppers heading to Oxford Street, Regent Street, Bond Street and Covent Garden will be able to enjoy the festive glow throughout the month.

Marvel at luxury yachts

Taking place every year at London's Excel Centre (January 7th-16th, £13; Custom House, Tel: 0870 848 6666), the boat show gets bigger and better every year.

You can find everything you need at the show including boats, equipment and holidays, and even for those who get seasick it is still worth a trip to see some of the most expensive boats in the world.

This year’s boat show will also boast a number of exciting entertainment options to visitors including theatrical shows, deck games, seminars and refreshing bars.
