London Triathlon 2011: Get the running shoes on

If you are taking part or just keen to sit on the sidelines and support, the London Triathlon is the biggest in the world and is a truly unique day out. See competitors swim in Royal Victoria Dock in London's historic Docklands area against the stunning backdrop of Canary Wharf, before they take off on the bike route and running course. Races are of varying length depending on the category of competitors.

BBC Proms: See classical music at its best

One of the classical music highlights in London's calendar, the BBC Proms starts this month and runs until September. Established in 1895, the Proms is held every year at the Royal Albert Hall and now there are more than 70 concerts performed in the afternoons and evenings. International performers regularly make appearances at the Proms, which also champions British music and musicians. The first night opens with the world premiere of a piece by Judith Weir and includes Brahms' Academic Festival Overture and other choral and piano music.

Lovebox: Get into London's festival spirit

The music festivals continue in July, but perhaps the best in London's calendar is Lovebox. Held in Victoria Park, the three-day festival attracts around 65,000 people every year, offering a mixed genre of music. Expect to see in this year's line-up The Wombats, Scissor Sisters, Jessie J, Snoop Dogg, 2ManyDJs and Blondie. Or, see some of the biggest music acts from around the world at the Wireless festival in Hyde Park, another blend of dance, pop and rock acts, including the Black Eyed Peas, Plan B, The Chemical Brothers, Pulp and Tinie Tempah, while you can also head to the chill out areas and try out the interactive games. You can also find other kinds of festivals going on in London in July such as the London Literature Festival, which celebrates the best fiction, poetry and specialist writing around today. Held at the Southbank Centre, it will see well-known authors such as Philip Pullman make appearances, while visitors can catch stagings of famous novels such as Jeanette Winterson's Sexing the Cherry.

Pride London: Show you're proud

One of London's key events in the gay community, Pride London is more than just a parade; it hosts theatre events, music, art and entertainment, as well as leading over a million people through the streets of Oxford Street and ending at Whitehall, followed by performances on the main stage throughout the day. Houses of Parliament Summer Opening: Get touristy

Two of London's biggest tourist attractions open their doors from July for the summer season. The Summer Opening at the Houses of Parliament gives people, particularly those from outside the UK, the chance to see inside the Commons and Lords Chambers, the Queen's Robing Room, Royal Gallery and one of the original parts of the palace, Westminster Hall. And while you are soaking up Britain's political history, you can head on over to learn about Britain's royal history during the opening of Buckingham Palace.
