We are very disappointed as one of the rooms we had booked (a month ahead of the trip) was in the basement: tiny, dark, musty (the window could not open), the bathroom was very narrow (with shower cabin only), and the room itself overlooked a backyard dump. The condition of the room corresponded to a hostel category, not the advertised 3-star hotel. I talked to the supervisor, who was nice and apologetic, and was told to write a note to the manager, Mr. Singh. In it, I described our dissatisfaction and requested some compensation (at least partial refund on the bill)

We spent two nights at Piries Hotel in March 2009. The location allows for good restaurant selection, easy bus connections, and is close enough that taxi from the Royal Mile is cheap. I booked two rooms- neither had a working shower - no cold water in either tub, no mount for the shower head. It was clean, comfortable, and warm. Service and breakfast were good. Parking is a bit problematic, but is so for most of Edinburgh.

Me and my partner stayed in this hotel for two nights over the Valentines weekend. I was concerned after all the apparent mixed reviews I read but honestly there was little to fault considering how much we paid! Our room was very large, I booked a double and our room had a king and three singles which was odd haha. The beds were very comfortable and the room was clean (and cleaned while we stayed) and had good facilities (tea/coffee, TV etc). The decor was a bit shabby but went with the hotel (converted from several old houses?) and nothing remotely bad about it either. The bathroom was also very clean and we got plenty of towels and everything was fine. The staff were very very friendly and a pleasure to deal with. The location is good in terms of walking to the main attractions and I would stay here again if I visited Edinburgh. It was nice to have a room that was comfortable to come back to as opposed to one to leave our things (I'm a student haha).

We stayed at the Piries 6 - 8th December, I had booked it for my partner’s birthday and had organised a bottle of champagne to be in the room upon arrival. The room itself was clean and very large, there was one double bed which to be honest was a king-size bed, and 2 other single beds in the room. It was comfortable and the reception staff were very friendly. If there was one small downfall it was the parking, but I managed to find a space on arrival right outside at 2.30pm on the Saturday and the traffic warden said we were okay there, but would have to pay to leave it there as it was before 6.30pm, that was 2.00 per hour, so it cost 8.00, but I didn't mind as I knew the car was safe outside the hotel until Monday morning. The hotel is within such an easy walking distance into Rose Street, Princess Street etc. and I would definitely book this hotel again.

I would say if this is the last bed in Edinburgh try another town. We stayed during the festival which of course increases the bed costs but the Piries Hotel was a truly crazy price for what you got. The only positive was that the room was quite large. The sheets did not fit the bed size and had holes in them. One of the teaspoons was stuck onto the saucer (dirty), the upholstered chair was badly stained and worn to the point that I didn't want to touch it let alone sit on it. Breakfast was on top of the already exorbitant price. The hotel staff, whilst being pleasant enough did not know about parking restrictions outside the hotel or nearby, in fact they really didn't know an awful lot about Edinburgh in general. The hotel is not as central as portrayed in advertising. It did not appear to be a safe area to walk into town at night for a single woman.
