Where is Vauxhall?

Where is Vauxhall

Vauxhall is home to The Oval Cricket Ground, Vauxhall City Farm, New Covent Garden Market and MI6, making this a really interesting up and coming central London district for you to discover! It also offers plenty of historic attractions, award winning local parks and easy access to surrounding areas such as Lambeth, Battersea and Kennington.

You’ll find Pimlico and Westminster just over Vauxhall Bridge too! Sitting in the London borough of Lambeth (in the southern-most point of the congestion charging zone), Vauxhall has the added advantage of a tube station (Vauxhall) in tube zone 1 that offers you easy access to the rest of this exciting capital. Its proximity to Waterloo Train Station is really advantageous too!

History of Vauxhall

History of Vauxhall

The district of Vauxhall was originally part of the larger area of South Lambeth, until in 1317 King Edward II bestowed the manor of Vauxhall to Sir Roger d’Amory to honour his ‘good service’ at the Battle of Bannockburn. Up until the middle of the 1700s, the area was primarily used for the trade of market produce to the City, and before redevelopment began at this time the land was marshy and very basic. One of the key parts of the development was the opening of Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens (part of which still remain as Spring Gardens), where Londoners flocked to see the shows and entertainment. Although there is no mention of Vauxhall in the Domesday Book, the area does have a long history and its bridges are a key part of its heritage. Not only is Vauxhall Bridge the first ever iron bridge to cross the Thames (built in 1811), the area can also boast that is has the remains of what is thought to be the oldest of all London bridges, dating as far back as the bronze ages!

In the early and mid 19th Century, Vauxhall was neglected by city planning and a lot of it was damaged during World War II. The resulting unfashionable image of Vauxhall created a lower than average rental cost for premises in the area. Thankfully, a number of companies and organisations have moved in, increasing the popularity and appeal of the district. This, along with the London housing boom in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and substantial redevelopment of Vauxhall’s riverside, have raised the profile and improved the amenities and attractions in the area. Today, Vauxhall is a vibrant area that is developing fast and somewhere that you really won’t want to miss!

The Positives of Vauxhall

The Positives of Vauxhall

One of the great things about Vauxhall is the fact that it has undergone redevelopment in recent years. This means that there are a number of really modern areas with excellent bars and restaurants for you to try. You’ll also find a really interesting array of attractions in Vauxhall, ranging from the history and heritage of St Peters Church and Vauxhall Park, to the vibrancy of New Covent Garden Market and the uniqueness of Vauxhall City Farm.

You can get to a number of other interesting local areas, such as Lambeth, Battersea and Westminster with ease too. As for the rest of London and the UK, it’s all within easy reach thanks to Vauxhall Tube Station and nearby Waterloo Train Station. Overall, Vauxhall has something to offer everyone and is well worth a visit during your trip to the UK!

Need to Know Vauxhall

Need to Know Vauxhall

Historically, Londoners have seen Vauxhall as a place to pass through and not stop! This has resulted in lower than average land prices, which businesses have snapped up and developed commercial properties on. That’s not to say that Vauxhall is just a commercial district though, as a number of new shopping developments, bars and restaurants have also sprung up alongside businesses. You will find that this area is densely populated, but this is part of any Central London district and just adds to the lively experience. As with all districts in the area, Vauxhall is congested with road traffic; this really shouldn’t be a problem though, as you can walk to surrounding areas and use the fantastic tube links to get around the remainder of London.
