Staying at Belford Backpackers Hostel will certainly give you plenty to write home about! This totally unique and dynamic cheap Edinburgh hostel inhabits a 19th century church in the West End of Edinburgh that has been ingeniously transformed to provide you with somewhere really reasonable to sleep! You can stay in a shared dormitory with shared bathroom that holds 4-8 people and be surrounded by stained glass windows. There are private rooms here too but these get snapped up really fast!

Belford Backpackers Hostel is really close to the most dramatic stretch of the Water of Leith (Dean Village) where you will find old mill buildings, rushing weirs and Dean Bridge. You will also find the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art nearby. It will only take you a few minutes to walk to lively New Town. Here you should stop off at the Georgian House in beautiful Charlotte Square, before heading off to shop on Princes Street or going on to Old Town to explore Edinburgh Castle.

• By Train : You can travel to either Waverley Train Station or Haymarket Train Station in Edinburgh to get to Belford Backpackers Hostel. It’s best to catch a taxi from Waverley Train Station as it’s a good 20 minute walk to the hostel from here. You can walk with ease from Haymarket Train Station.
• On Foot : From Haymarket Train Station take the main exit onto Haymarket Terrace and cross over the road. Turn to your right and start walking. Turn left into Palmerston Place. This will lead you straight onto Douglas Gardens. You will find Belford Backpackers Hostel at the bottom of the hill on the right, occupying a converted church.

We were excited to book a 4-person room in a church. But what Belford fails to tell you is that all rooms share a ceiling in the church. You may be separated by cubicle walls, but you are still part of a large open room. This means that you can hear all other guests come and go, yell, snore, slam doors etc. throughout the night. If noise doesn't bother you, this is a great location. But if noise DOES bother you, book elsewhere because you might not be getting much sleep.

Belford is a quirky hostel about 15/20 minutes walk from the centre of Edinburgh city. It's a converted church and the stained glass windows and stone staircases add to the experience of staying there. It's cheap and cheerful, all the staff were friendly and helpful and the communal area was comfortable and open until late with a pool table and dart board as well as a TV room. The actual sleeping area is basic, with bunk beds and thin walls dividing each room. The rooms are, however, perfectly comfortable, equipped with a power point, mirror, bin and heater. Overall, our experience of Belford was very pleasant, and I would definitely stay there again next time I visit Edinburgh on a budget.
