While I was originally disappointed not to be able to book a room in the Castle, Hatfield College Durham turned out to be a great place to stay. The location was very convenient, the room was comfortable, the breakfast was particularly well done, and the porter at reception was very kind and helpful

Very spacious room in a building full of character. Pleasant gardens with picnic tables in the grounds of Hatfield College Durham and easy access to the river walk below (though it's a bit of a climb back up the steps!). Cathedral clock not too intrusive with windows closed. By the second night, we were sleeping through the chimes
